Kismet's Thayan Name Generators

Disclaimer: This page discusses one view of Thay, an infamously evil, slave-keeping, magocratic country in the Forgotten Realms. This vision is offered for entertainment purposes for adults only. I do not condone anything described; quite the opposite. Please read with discretion, and feel free to stop anytime. Before you use any ideas herein, please gain your group's full consent to engage the material.

A close-up of a woman's face shows a stylized geometric tattoo over the side of her head, which is shaved, and across the top half of her face. Her golden eyes are surrounded by glowing red as she looks directly at the viewer.

Generate Thayan Names Right Here, Right Now

Below you can generate:

  1. A noble's first name

  2. A noble house the character is attached to

  3. A commoner's first name

  4. A commoner's surname

  5. A tharch the character hails from

Please note: Thayan nobles use house names instead of surnames. Commoners have - and are expected to use - family names, though they often include noble houses they serve when they identify themselves. Any Thayan can add the tharch they're based out of, though they're unlikely to do so with non-Thayans. The noble houses generated are all ones I've created and shared here on this site.

For Example

The noble-born Lukkor Ashmeddai of High Thay will get some respect due to his ancient house and may get some prestige for where he hails from. Usually only the most powerful and prestigious are invited to that tharch or would dare to claim it as their base of operations. Meanwhile, the commoner Alhartur Inkos of Delhumide, servant of House Quantoul, will probably elicit jokes and pity. Delhumide isn't the nicest place, and servants of House Quantoul are known for being used in their masters' experiments when there are no slaves on-hand. Especially in Delhumide, this rarely turns out well.

Developments & Updates

Over the years, two generous readers have sent me different name generators based on what I offer on my site. Thundermark made me aware of Perchance with his generator and worked with me on figuring out the sounds that a Thayan name generator should produce. Rob McCaleb put together an Excel file to generate names for his incredible map of Thay. I also put together a version on my own for RPGChartMaker; you can learn how to use it here. As of March 2025, I've been learning more through Perchance, and I'm happy to report that I've now combined all three of our efforts in the generator above. My enduring thanks to them for inspiring me and sharing their work!
